What are MERV 11  Air Filters & Furnace Filters?

MERV 11 air and furnace filters are similar to any other filter, but rated as MERV 11. Minimum Efficiency Report Values (MERV) ratings are intended to reflect the ability of a filter to trap particles.

The higher the MERV rating, the better the capability. For example, an air and furnace filter with a MERV 11 rating can trap up to 79% of particles while an air and furnace filter with a MERV rating of 5 can only trap up to 34%.

In addition, the size of the particles each can trap varies. Typically, the higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the air and furnace filter can trap.

Most households utilize a MERV 8 filter, but there are plenty of households that utilize a MERV 11 filter. If you have allergies or pets, you may want to use a filter with a higher MERV rating.

There is no harm in opting for a filter with a higher MERV rating that can help you and your family breathe cleaner air. When in doubt, go with the better filter. You can always change up the filter type when it’s time for a new one.

What Is The Difference Between MERV 8  And 11?

MERV 8 and MERV 11 are both types of air and furnace filters, but with different ratings.

A MERV 11 filter can absorb smaller particles compared to a MERV 8 filter. Both are suitable for households, but some households may prefer cleaner air.

MERV 11 air and furnace filters can trap particles as small as 1.0 to 3.0 microns and do so with greater efficiency compared to a MERV 8 filter.

Households that prefer cleaner air should opt for a MERV 11 air filter instead of a MERV 8 filter.

Regardless of the MERV rating you choose, be sure to find the right fit to maximize efficiency. The right size filter can also last longer compared to one that’s not the right fit.

How Often Should You Change A MERV 11 Air Filter?

The frequency you change your MERV 11 air filter can depend on external factors and personal preference.

Factors can include allergies, HVAC usage, seasonal changes, pets, and so forth.

Anything that can cause your filter to become dirty faster can be a driver that contributes toward the frequency it needs to be changed. In most cases, you can change your air filter every 3 to 6 months to maintain a clean filter.

However, if you have a large dog that sheds a lot, you may need to change more often. In addition, if you have severe allergies, you may choose to change your filter more often.

These are just a few examples of why you may want to change your air filter more often.

If you’re not sure if it’s time for a new air filter, it’s easy enough to take a glance at your current filter to help you decide.
