Furnace air filters trap contaminants and help filter the air flowing into your home when the heat is on. It can also help your heating system operating efficiently by trapping particles.
The frequency air filters should be changed can depend on the size, type, and usage amount of the filter. When filters are ready to be replaced, you can spot noticeable discoloration on the filter along with a build up of dust and dirt.
While you may not look at your filter every day, it’s not hard to check your furnace air filter. Other signs your filter may need to be changed is a dusty home. We know you have plenty to think about on a regular basis so to ensure your filters remain clean, set a reminder to check your filter every 30 days to assess when it will need replacement.
Furnace air filters can vary by size, MERV rating, and material.
The primary benefit of a high-efficiency furnace air filter is a cleaner output of air. Additional benefits can include helping HVAC systems to work more efficiently, cleaner HVAC and duct components, and a fresher smelling home.
There are a few things to consider when it comes to choosing the right furnace air filter for your home; the size and MERV rating. Air furnace filters can vary in size, depending on your heating system.
If your heating system has an existing filter, you can check the frame for a printed size. Alternatively, you can remove the filter and measure the length, width, and height of the filter. Once you’ve determined the right size filter, you can dive into the finer details, such as the MERV rating.
The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the filter can trap. As a result, it can output even cleaner air. While a higher MERV rating can mean cleaner air, it can also slow airflow.
A lower MERV rating on the other hand can be more energy efficient, but may require replacement more frequently. If you have allergies, opting for a MERV rating 8 may be most appropriate.
