What Are the Types of Furnace Air Filters Available?

Furnace air filters can vary by size, MERV rating, and material.

  • Size: Ensuring you purchase and use the right size furnace air filter is important to maximize its effectiveness. You can check the existing furnace air filter for a size or refer to the owners manual for your HVAC system.
  • MERV rating: You may notice that furnace air filters are rated differently. MERV ratings indicate the capability of a filter to trap particles. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles they can capture, delivering a better filtration ability.
  • Material: Filters can be fiberglass, polyester, synthetic fibers, pleated, washable, and electrostatic.

What Benefits Do High-Efficiency Furnace Air Filters Offer?

The primary benefit of a high-efficiency furnace air filter is a cleaner output of air. Additional benefits can include helping HVAC systems to work more efficiently, cleaner HVAC and duct components, and a fresher smelling home.

How Can I Choose the Right Furnace Air Filter for My Home?

There are a few things to consider when it comes to choosing the right furnace air filter for your home; the size and MERV rating. Air furnace filters can vary in size, depending on your heating system.

If your heating system has an existing filter, you can check the frame for a printed size. Alternatively, you can remove the filter and measure the length, width, and height of the filter. Once you’ve determined the right size filter, you can dive into the finer details, such as the MERV rating.

The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the filter can trap. As a result, it can output even cleaner air. While a higher MERV rating can mean cleaner air, it can also slow airflow.

A lower MERV rating on the other hand can be more energy efficient, but may require replacement more frequently. If you have allergies, opting for a MERV rating 8 may be most appropriate.
