What are MERV 6 Air Filters & Furnace Filters?

A filter with a MERV 6 rating can capture particles 3.0 - 10.0 (microns) greater than or equal to 35%. In other words, a MERV 6 filter should trap at least 35% of particles. In fact, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers (ASHARE) recommends an air filter with a MERV 6 or higher rating for households.

On a MERV rating scale from 1 to 20, a MERV 6 air and furnace filter helps maintain a cleaner environment than an air filter with a lesser rating. However, there are also aur filters with a higher rating, too. MERV 6 air filters are made with thinner materials, it allows for improved airflow while protecting against household allergens.

Minimum Efficiency Report Values (MERV) ratings record a filter’s ability to capture larger particles ranging between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). When determining the performance of a filter, referring to the MERV rating can be helpful. Filters with a MERV 6 to MERV 8 rating can trap pollutants such as mold spores, hair spray, dust mites, animal dander and cement dust. Typically, the higher the MERV rating, the larger the particles that the air filter can trap. For households, a MERV 6 air filter can do the job, but for places such as a hospital a filter with a higher MERV rating is generally used.

What Is The Difference Between MERV 6 And 8?

The primary difference between a MERV 6 and MERV 8 air filter is the ability to capture particles or allergens. In comparison, the MERV 8 filter is more likely to capture larger particles.

A MERV 6 filter should trap 35% to 49% of particles, but a MERV 8 filter should trap up to 85% of particles. The objective of an air filter is to help circulate clean air in your home or place of business. The cost difference between a MERV 6 and MERV 8 air filter should be minimal, if any.

The size of the filter is more likely to influence the cost. While a MERV 6 or higher air filter is recommended by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers (ASHARE), most households utilize a MERV 8 air filter. Filters with a MERV rating of 5 through 8 can filter out particles such as mold spores, hair spray, dust mites, animal dander and cement dust.

The quality of the filter can also come into play when we talk about the performance. Compare our high quality MERV 6 and MERV 8 air filters to choose the one that best meets your needs.

When Do I Need To Change My MERV 6  Air Filters?

Changing an air filter may not be top of mind, as we usually don’t look at them often. However, just imagine that they’re catching particles when in use. If they’re working, they’re working hard.

The frequency you choose to change your air filter can vary depending on preference and use. In most cases, changing your filter every 3-6 months is sufficient. Putting your filters on autoship or ordering in bulk can aid in a more regular process for changing your filter.

Maintaining a clean air filter helps your heating and air system maximize efficiency while keeping the air you breathe, cleaner.
